Botanical Symbols

Although this is not a typical Solomonic magic thing, I ve decided to show you my system of botanical symbols.

I employ this in labelling my plant parts. I ve devised a system of combinatory symbols that is easy to use, easy to remember, and hard to crack for anyone not familiarise with it s basics, so your planty things can be safe in their jars and bottles from nosy people.

The top part represents the plant part in question and the bottom part represents the plant itself. My six parts are derived from Agrippa s correspondencies and I use this inm employing them. Although each plant has it s virtues, every part of it may have different virtues and can be used differently.

The root, with all its subterranean symbolism and deposit of energies and potent juices, is ruled by Saturn and this is my symbol for it, a rough sketch of an outstretched root, placed upside-down for symetrical reasons of the sign series.

The stem, carrier of the sap, vertical and straight and hard and masculine, is of course ruled by Mars, and the symbol pretty much speaks for itself: one main stem with four secondary ones, the base stems being larger.

The leaves, the receptors of light and heat much the same way our own natural satellite is,  are ruled by the Moon, and I ve chosen to stylise it as triangular not because of some arcane symbolism related to the Fire sign or Water sign but just because it seem damn well pleasent and dandy!

The flowers, feminine, receptive, open and beautiful, are governed by the ruler of reproduction and beaty, Venus. I ve stylised six petals into one circular glyph due to the sexual symbolism of the hexagram and the pleasant polarity it develops.

The fruits, the berries, the nuts or the husks containg seeds and other potent things, usually full in shape and sometimes hard, are ruled by Jupiter, the master of abundance, stylised here as two round shapes on either side of the stem.

Last but not least, some of the most potent parts of the plant, containing the entire genetical code of itself and the ability to reproduce, the seeds, are ruled by the master of information and androginity, Mercury. The symbol is quite obviously representative of the two halves of the seed and the embrio within.

To give an illustrative example, we`ll take the symbol I ve devised for Elder, Sambucus Niger, and combine it in two symbols:

Base symbol: Elder

Elder berries                  Elder stems

Just for kicks, another plant that does not have a simple letter symbol, but a magico-astrological symbol for hystorical reasons, the revered Wormwood, Artemisia Absinthium:

Base symbol of Wormwood

Wormwood leaves         Wormwood root

Frequent problems:

But Asterion, you re insane! You can`t make up symbols for a gagillion plant species and subspecies!

You`re right. And I won`t. Basic Solomonic magic teaches the use of 24 plants in the Book of Raziel, add that to another 7 planetary inceses, add to that 10 or 20 of the most potent plants of my country`s magical tradition and that`s kinda it.
Since you can accomplish at least 6 operations with one plant, those would suffice.
Every plant, and I mean EVERY plant has a magical use. But not all are as potent or as fit as others. So I will stick to a few and experiment. I think I m creative enough to come up with at least 200 base symbols so I m set..

But Asterion, you ve gone all Wiccan?

Not really. Plant lore is far older than Solomonic magic, it s used all over the world and it s your duty as a practicioner to become proficient in it.

But Asterion, you`re a moron! My Book of Shadows doesn t list any uses for Wormwood stems or Elder flowers!

It Should! I use every part of the plant, nothing is discarded.

But Asterion, where is the Sun in all of this plant arrangement?

The Sun rules the resin of the plants, wherever that may be the case. Not all plants produce it and when they produce it, the resin is treated like a separate substance in it`s own class, like Frankincense, Opoponax or Myrrh, so I have not included a base symbol for Resin.

Be free to develop your own set, this is just my way of labelling my magical jars and my macerating tinctures and wines.

Best wishes and much love!

    1. Altars do not a sacred function or symbolism in Old System Magic or Solomonic magic. you have it there to keep all the stuff in from of you. It s very pragmatic. No new age bullshit or kabbalistic symbolism. New small table, new white cloth. That s kinda it.

    1. I do not deal with modern magic. It s a prostitution of many systems dumbed down so that everyone thinks they can do magic and feel happy. Well it s a lot of work , with no visualisation of imaginary pentagrams. It has nothing to do with what I practice. I have nothing against those who use it, but I have never met anyone who got results from it.

    2. Is it possible to use magick to heal the poor and assist in relieving poverty?

      Delete
    3. It s very possible, but it s as wrong as raising the dead. Poverty is not a problem. Poverty is a condition of man who yearns for others have. Everybody can live on very little and be extremely happy. But without a nice house, nice car, nice ipod, fancy food, widescreen TV. Because of people s wishes to have more then others, they create imbalance. They create richness for themselves and poverty for others. In their next embodyment, the sould who was moved by greed needs to suffer loss, and thus will live in poverty. While others will be wealthy. They learn meekness and attone for their sin against their kin. The poor have the debt to suffer for their past greed, and also have the means to elevate the wealthy. The wealthy can chose to help, out of compassion, and that will elevate them spiritually. Many saints and adepts were born in rich families, yet gave their wealth to the poor. By trying to eradicate poverty (that existed as long as humanity has, i m sure) you would just be eliminating a means by which the soul would purify itself: poor people will lose their method of learning humility, while rich people will lose their means of re-becoming human and compassionate. That is why pain exists. That is why poverty exists. And death. And sorrow. And sickness. They are trials and gifts, not afflictions.

    1. POverty cannot be eliminated because you want to. No more than poison can be eliminated. While some suffer from poverty, some profit (both materialistically, people who get rich, or spiritually, people who can do good to poor people in order to elevate their condition). Just because you do not like poverty and do not see it s merit does not mean it should be eliminated. Not one world teacher, of which the world has had many, has made any efforts to eliminate poverty, or pointy objects, or mosquitos.

How do you learn astral projection? I've never had much success with it.

I cannot recommend any books that will make you understand this. Travel to poor areas and help or try to help. This is not something to be understood by reading books.

In my view any books on theodicy, teology, philosophy are inherently useless. They re good as a debate topic and course matter for classes, but they wll not aid your way in any way.

These are matters to be lived and filtered through, not read about and underlined on a textbook.

    2. I skipped the astral projection question:

Dear anonymous, throughout this blog I have never mentioned AP or astral evocation or any such mehod, because I d not practice them. I practice good ol fashion practical solomonic magic. No closing your eyes, no third eye, no visualising. Just prayer and ritual.

Please ask people who claim to have success with that.

I honestly wouldn t ask a fat guy how to lose weight :))

    5. The first book would be the Key of Solomon. The second primer would be the Fourth Book by Agrippa. Then read anything you want. Please be sure to either read A LOT of books before practicing. Don just grab a book and try stuff. Read. Read. Reads. Think, internalise. Learn. Read some more. Then practice.

Is a knife dangerous? Well, if you use it to spread butter, no. If you use it to repeatedly stab yourself in the eye, yes.

Is a stick safe? If you look at it and throw it away, no. If you poke a rottweiler with it, then yes.

Magic is both safe and unsafe. Please read. How old are you??

Are there any videos you could recommend watching on practical Solomonic magic?

      Delete
    9. No, there are no ready-made videos which you can just follow and get everything you ever dreamed. Most of the videos out there are crap explanations from people kinda enamoured with magic, who want content for their youtube channel.

Magic is not like cooking or baking or carpentry, where millions of people practice it, a few hundreds can teach it effectively, a few dozens can tewach it in your languange and a few of those actually make the effort of making videos.

There are books, of course. You can consult those.

Pick the brand of magic speaks to you and follow through reading what other people have practiced and what they got.

      But first, read.

Books are the Youtube videos of practicioners that lived 400 years ago. Do not skip the basics.

    12. How many hours a day should I put into reading about magick?

Magic is the English word for it. Not magick. Magician, not magickian :) Any ammount of time you wish. Nobody writes a rule on that.

You said that Modern Magick doesn't work. How do I tell if a brand of magick is effective or not?

I don t know if I said that. I may have implied it. Yes, Modern magic is a watered down version of ritual magic meant to sell books to lazy people. It might work. I have no idea.
Think of it like this: you have a pizza, and you have a picture of a pizza. Would you eat the pizza itself or the picture? Sure, the picture might have some nutritive value, and taste, and it might be digested, and It might look like pizza. But it won t be the real thing ;)

How you know it s effective? You apply it and see if you get results. That s kinda it.

Like spelling magic with a capital G, maGic, just to be spiffy. It s a fad and nothing else. And people use it because they have a sense that i they use it they are refering to REAL magic.

Yes, I have a picture of the ToL because the Kircher Tree of Life is one of the bases of the planetary magical work. I do not do energy work, it has nothing to do with energy work, I will repeat what I ve said in these comments, on my blog and in my interviews: vizualisation is not magic. It s fancy.

    19. 1. There are things you read and things you do. Magic you can read about first. Operating a drill, making cupcakes, collecting coins, you all have to read about them to know how to do hem good. Prayer, not so much. You eat, and you haven t read anything on eating. You breathe and drink and so forth without reading about them. Prayer is the same. Sit quitly and talk to the Father. say whatever you wish to him sincerely and time will pass without you knowing it. In time, your prayers will become more and more passionate.

  8. 1. Poke Runyon has nothing to do with Solomonic magic. He practices staring in the black mirror face distortion placed in a triangle (three completely different techniques into one) and worship of Baal and Astaroth, something a Solomonic Magician would never do. He has his own path and method, but It s not my own.

    2. How do you find someone to teach you magic in person? You don t. Learn it by yourself. Read and practice.

    3. about philosophy. The topic is not useless in and of itself, just useless to our dscussion, to Solomonic magic, and to my time. Please be encouraged to pursue philosophy in your own time. I preffer to spend my time doing and learning rather than arguing for the sake o argument.

    3. Paracelsus is not related to magic. He was chiefly and alchemist. Please look for books by yoursef. Yes I ould talk about alchemy, philosophy, woodcarving, cooking, tantric sex, graffiti, calligraphy or history, but none of these are the topics of this blog. Please keep the questions about magic. I cannot singlehandedly teach you every subject of knowledge in the world.

"... practiced by the fathers of the grimoires, less like the legendary Hermes, Cyprian and Apollonius, and more like Petrus Abano, Johannes Trithemius, Cornelius Agrippa, Phillipus Paracelsus and many other unmentioned mages through history."

I thought Paracelsus was about magic because of your video description.

"Please keep the questions about magic. I cannot singlehandedly teach you every subject of knowledge in the world. "

Sorry about going off topic. Thank you so much for your patience, time, and putting up with my misunderstanding. Is there anything I could do for you in return?

  10. 1. Please do not read a little of anything then start with the questions. Please read the whole book. And do not ask me if all these things are possible, I cannot be held responable, I have not tried each and every one. Try them if YOU NEED THEM; and see. Do not do anythning out of curiosity.
Please read the books and make a list of questions. Chanches are, by the time you finish reading, you won t have to ask half of them.

    2. Yes. At the time, I was studying his talismans, but I now have some doubts he is the author, hence my change of heart regarding Paracelsus. We make mistakes, just like everyone else :) But from that list of magicians, you stoppped with exactly him :))

    3. The one thing you can do for me is ask only if you have researched the question elsewhere, on google, wikipedia at least, or books, and you do not have an answer.

My way of showing love is sharing knowledge and having patience and I serve people with this in the virtue of the everlasting bond of brotherhood between all sentient creatures. I do not want anything in return. But I could ask you to moderateyour questions strictly to magic and ask mature questions. And read for yourself. And research. And only then ask whatever is unclear.

"But I could ask you to moderateyour questions strictly to magic and ask mature questions. And read for yourself. And research. And only then ask whatever is unclear. "

I will follow your advice. Why are my questions not mature?

Again, I am really sorry for being disrespectful.

    ReplyDelete
  13. A mature question is:
When it cmes to Paracelsus, how much of his talismanic work is pseudo-Arnaldan and how much is his own invention? Would his talismans fit the framework of his work or could they be missatributed? Is his knowledge of metals and metalsmithing reflected in the Archidoxes , or was that just commun knowledge?

    An immature question is:
What should I read by Paracelsus?

    A mature question would be:
In the Key of Solomon s experiment on invisibility, is the invisility physical (total dissapearence from the light spectrum) psychicological (general focus diverted from one s person) or magical (camouflaging oneself from being tracked or perceived, especially by other magicians?

    An immature question is:
    Can you actually turn invisible?

    A mature question would be:
Howdo i know an author of a certain brand of magic is honest and his methods are sound? What are the sings that he actually worked the process, had a few misses, has a few hits, and developed good methods?

    An immature question is:
How do I tell if a brand of magick is effective or not?

    1. Unfortunately I can t really explain to you what makes a question mature or not, but I can exemplify. The matter is not my ability to convey the matureness of an inquiry based on two or three rhetorical factors, but your ability, both intalectual and linguistic, to grasp them. That is why I asked how old you were, a question you have still not addressed. I enjoy your enthusiasm, but if you would not answer this one question, I wll als stop aswering. ;)

How would I phrase this question below in a more mature way?

"You have a picture of the Tree of Life as the background of your avatar. Do you practice energy work? What can I read about this topic?"

    ReplyDelete
  15. Well first of all, energy work has nothing to do with the Tree of Life. The fact that the two interlock in your mind is immature. Like most people assiociate magical rituals with wicca and hooded robes and colored candles. They ask what kind of altar you use because in theitr mind you have to have an altar just like in wicca.

Energy work is a broad field, anything from Tai Chi and Qi Gong to Reiki. I do not practice those. I have, when I was younger, and now find them to be pure crap.

The Tree of Life is a mnemonic device used in modern Kabbala. It s the basis of the modern kabbalistic system and post-Agrippan magic. It s like linking visualisations to having eyelids, just because you need to close your eyes to visualise.

The Tree of life has nothing to do with energy work. Some might use the T o L to engage in energy work, but that is not its scope or origin.

    ReplyDelete
  16. In talking maturity vs immaturity, please understand I am not trying to act condescending or arrogant to seem more knowledgeable, It s meant as constructive criticism. Asking the right question will get you very far ;) Hope all this helps, my friend.

  18. How do I phrase a question about Agrippa and epistemology without being immature?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Well, I certainly hope you re not put off by my criticissm. If I had someone to knock sense into me when I was starting out in magic, I would ve wasted far less time.

A good question is something that has an answer that you suppose only the person can offer. I get a tone of questions in the line of Hey who was Crowley? When you can easily google the answer, it s an immature question.
Also, very broad and vague questions like What s your opinion on religion? Is clearly wrong. I could go on for days talking about religiuon or any other saubject, but you would have gained nothing.
Also, something that is quite obviously a mystery for most of humanity , like Is there a God? Or What happens when you die? Are immature questions. I could tell you my view on them, and they will differ from the answers of other, but i cannot TELL you tha God exists, or explain in detail rthe process of death , beyond a shadow of a doubt.

I think you re asking good questions my friend.

about the Agrippa one, no idea. I d have to hear the question first. :D

  20. "In short, Agrippa argued for a synthetic vision of magic whereby the natural world combined with the celestial and the divine through Neoplatonic participation, such that ordinarily licit natural magic was in fact validated by a kind of demonic magic sourced ultimately from God. By this means Agrippa proposed a magic that could resolve all epistemological problems raised by skepticism in a total validation of Christian faith." - Wikipedia on Agrippa.

How much did Agrippa write about epistemology?

Can magic be used to resolve epistemological issues?

    ReplyDelete
  22. 1. No idea how much. I ve read Agrippa as a magician, not a philosopher. I was looking for practical details, not epistemological rants. That is for you to decide and think about after you ve read his work. But why do you ask me and not just read him for yourself?

    2. I have severe doubts. Humans are humans and will have issues with anything. We ask WHY constantly, like 5 year olds.
Say you want to find out if there s a life after death.
You manage to conjure up the angel of Death. You ask him. He says Yes.
You ask him: How do you know?
He says: We ll I m the angel of Death, of course I know.
    Y: Can you be certain?
A: Yes. Just like you re a computer engineer, and know that computer exist because you deal with them, I m the angel of Death and deal with death and what comes after.
    Y: Why is there death?
A: So that multiple lives can have breaks between them and reset the conciousness.
    Y: Why?
A: so that you can forget your past deeds and concentrate upon the present ones and act selflessly.
Y: So that you can evolve.
    A: Why?
Y: because evolution is inherent to all sentient creatures.
    A: Why?
Y: Because movement is mandatory from one pole to the other in all things and within the realm of time, movement with completion is considered evolution.
    Y: Why?
A: Because you re an asshole, that why. Stop asking. I ll be back for you in 5 years if you don t stop eating KFC.

Humans have issues with knowledge because we are immersed in ignorance. Angels, demons and jinn, do not. You ask a questrion, you get an answer. You wat a job done, the job is done. Magic cannot reassure yopu of the validity of knoewledge, of the purpose of knowing and such matters. You could use it in a divinatory sense, to further you knowledge, and the knowledge of knowledge, and the learning of the theories and opinions of epistyemology, but your epistemological questions will only be answered when you complete your journey as a spirit throughout creation.

      3) Avoid personal questions or questions about you.
      4) Keep questions related to Solomonic magic.

Okay, I skipped step two when I asked questions about angels. I will stop posting here for a while and try to improve the quality of my posts.

    1. Wormwood is ruled by Mars only on the internet, I think. It s name is in Latin Arthemisia Absinthum, and it s Lunar since ancient times.

Other than bitterness, it has no Martial feature whatsoever, it s dedicated to Artemis, the virgin-warrior-hunter aspect of the Moon.

But anyways, you can use whatever symbol you wish. This is just my personal fancy :D

  26. I can't tell if this post is immature or not. I am sorry if it is.

"If I had someone to knock sense into me when I was starting out in magic, I would ve wasted far less time."

What other advice do you have to put more sense into me?

  27. "I m sorry but this is a childish question.

How old are you??"

I asked you if magic were unsafe because of what you said below:

"Yes, you must try things, yes, you must experiment, but do not jump into practice with enthusiasm and ignorance all at once. Think of magic as a garden or a forest full of fruits berries: before putting everything brightly-colored and fancy-looking in your mouth, try asking someone who knows his stuff. Poisoned berries and mushrooms can be the most fascinating fruits there, while nutritious roots, leaves and fruits can hide under more humble guises."
